There are also the problems caused by large proper motion. For example,
here's a partial list of multiple identities for some nearby stars:
Proxima Cen = V645 Cen = GSC 9010.04906
Barnard's star = NSV 9910 = GSC 425.00184
Wolf 359 = CN Leo = GSC 261.00377
Lacaille 9352 = NSV 14420 = GSC 7512.01262 = GSC 7512.01230 = GSC
7512.00762 (!)
I suspect that in some dense starfields even the discoverer's finder
chart may not be enough to identify some stars.... :(
