Reporting Chart Errors- The AAVSO chart team has begun addressing the chart errors reported on the website. Many of the simple fixes will be done by the next release date in November. Simple fixes are things that can be corrected without doing major surgery on the charts. These include inconsistent comps between different scale charts, typos in the header or footer information, incorrect coordinates or Harvard Designations, mis-labeled comp stars, etc. For some stars entirely new charts are being drawn that should take care of the reported errors as well as update the sequences and starfields. Charts that have reported errors pertaining to the sequences are only being updated where we can actually make an improvement in the situation based on more reliable photometry, unless the chart is just so ugly it scares observers away from observing the star, or makes observing or identifying it difficult. Mis-identifications of variables, incorrect positions and stars that have close companions not indicated on the chart are high on the priority list, whether we can upgrade the sequence or not. Please report any errors you find using the form on the charts web page at- http://vsnet.aavso.org/observing/charts/reporterror.shtml Before submitting your report, please check using the search engine to see if the error has already been reported by someone else. Many comp stars are suspected of being variable themselves or are known variables. Richard Huziak is compiling a list of these along with other suspected variables on the charts. Check here- http://vsnet.aavso.org/observing/charts/suspect.shtml Micro-variables, stars with an amplitude of 0.1V or less, and constant stars previously believed to be variable will be retained as comps in most cases. Check to see if your variable or suspected variable comp is one of these before reporting it as a problem. More importantly, be sure you are using the most recent version of the chart and your error has not already been fixed or addressed. This will save us time, as we still have to read through and prioritize all the reported errors. We are doing our best to address your concerns. The process will be much more efficient if you will help by eliminating the redundancies and wild goose chases before it gets to us. Thank you in advance, Mike Simonsen AAVSO Chart Team
