(fwd) SDSSp_J173008.38+624754.7 superhump detection by Vanmunster The SU UMa-type nature has been discovered by Tonny and Arto apparently independently. Congratulations! Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 22:47:24 -0000 From: "Tonny Vanmunster" <Tonny.Vanmunster@advalvas.be> Subject: [vsnet-alert 6793] SDSSp_J173008.38+624754.7 is a new UGSU type cataclysmic variable ! Dear colleagues, I have pleasure announcing the detection of superhumps in the recently discovered SDSS dwarf nova SDSSp J173008.38+624754.7 (see Szkody et al., astro-ph/0110291). I made a first attempt to do unfiltered time-series CCD photometry on this object on October 19/20, 2001, using the 0.35-m f/6.3 telescope at CBA Belgium Observatory. Unfortunately, the session had to be ended after 1.1 hours, due to clouds entering the sky. The resulting light curve already showed clear signs of a modulation. I have made it available on my web site. Tonight (October 22/23) is clear again, and allowed another unfiltered CCD session of SDSSp J173008.38+624754.7. At the moment of this writing, I'm tracking the variable already for 4.0 hours. The intermediate light curve is depicted on my web site, and clearly shows a typical superhump signature, thus establishing SDSSp J173008.38+624754.7 as a new UGSU-type dwarf nova. The amplitude of the system is about 0.40 mag. A preliminary analysis of the superhump period, using the PDM technique, reveals a value of 0.0789 +/- 0.001 day. Follow-up observations are strongly encouraged.
