"Compact Binaries in the Galaxy and Beyond"
             --------------------------------------------

17-22 November 2003, La Paz, Mexico

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce an international conference on Compact
Binaries under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union
to take place in the city of La Paz, Baja California Sur,
Mexico during 17-22 November 2003. The conference site is a
quiet Mexican city nestled between the rugged desert and its
picturesque bay, lined with beautiful beaches of the Gulf of California.

Compact interactive binaries can be found
in different classes of astrophysical objects across ages, masses,
wavelength ranges and distances. This meeting aims to discuss the wide
variety of such objects found in our galaxy and beyond which are the
source of some of the most energetic processes studied by astrophysics.

The conference should be of interest to anyone
involved with the observational, modeling, or theoretical aspects of
close interacting binaries and their environment.

The introduction of a number of large optical telescopes in recent
years and of UV and X-ray telescopes in orbit with unprecedented
high resolution and sensitivity is providing a new impetus for the
study of CBs. While the new results from these facilities have
started to appear in the literature, the qualitative breakthroughs
are expected in one or two years (by the time this conference will
be held) when a sufficient number of individual observations will
be accumulated in order to reach new conclusions.

The topics of the meeting include:

+ Interacting Binaries with Compact Primaries
in the Milky Way and other galaxies.

=09 + Products of Common Envelope Evolution: Symbiotic
             Stars and Planetary Nebulae Nuclei.

=09 + Ultraluminous X-ray sources

=09 + The Evolution of Close Binary Systems

=09 + Interacting compact binaries as SNIa progenitors.

+ Double degenerate binaries, AM CVn objects.

          + Cataclysmic Variables

=09 + Accretion Disks
