According to IAUC # 7866, the CTIO spectrum (only blueward) shows that the new object is # indeed a supernova, possibly of type I. The position of SN 2002by # is: R.A. = 17h50m18s.58, Decl. = -59o33'51".6 (2000.0), which is # about 25" west and 13" south of the center of ESO 139-G34. # IAUC 7865 informed a possible SN in NGC 7714 detected on the # infrared image taken on 1998 Sept. 5.4. The KAIT images from 1998 # Oct. 22 don't show this object.
