Dear SN watchers, A bright (mag 15) SN 2001fu was discovered by the KAIT. The discovery was made on Nov. 5.5 at mag about 15.1, and it was confirmed on the next day. The position of new object is R.A. = 8h52m16s.58, Decl. = -17o44'29".8 (2000.0), which is about 25" west and 11" north of the nucleus of the spiral (NED gives the classification as (R')SB(s)0^0^:, but no clear disk or arm are seen on DSS images) galaxy MCG -03-23-11 = ESO 563-G31 = PGC 24913. Because of somewhat low Galactic latitude (b=16.7), there are some foreground stars. A rmag 17.7 USNO star (position end figures 15s.86, 34".7) is there, whose offset from the nucleus of the galaxy is about 37" west and 6" north. Three mag 15-16 stars are there at about 1' north of the galaxy. The Vmag 10.8 star BD -17 2676 = GSC 6017-870 = TYC 6017 870 1 locates about 40" southeast of the galaxy; note that this star has a large proper motion (0".19 arcsec/yr), so please take care in comparing the archived images such as DSS. The recession velocity of the host galaxy is unknown, but the magnitude of SN at discovery indicates that it is neighbouring object. The followup photometry and spectroscopic confirmation are urged. Sincerely Yours, Hitoshi Yamaoka, Kyushu Univ., Japan yamaoka@rc.kyushu-u.ac.jp
