[vsnet-campaign-sn 209] SN 2001cy in UGC 11927
Dear SN watchers,
A new KAIT SN is discovered. It is now mag 16.2, and probably near
maximum.
According to IAUC 7655, SN 2001cy is discovered on June 30.5 when it
was mag about 16.3, and confirmed one day after at 0.1 mag brighter.
The SN locates at R.A. = 22h09m27s.76, Decl. = +40o59'16".5 (2000.0),
which is about 4" east and 6" south of the nucleus of the spiral (Sb)
galaxy UGC 11927. It superimposed on a faint arm region (the galaxy
itself has low surface brightness). Because of low galactic latitude
(b = -12o), there are several foreground stars around the galaxy. The
brightest one is rmag 15.8 (USNO-A2.0), 3" west and 22" north from the
nucleus of UGC 11297; and another rmag 16.8 star at 25" west and 15"
south from the nucleus. The SN is nearer to the nucleus than any
other foreground stars.
The recession velocity of the host galaxy (4478 km/s) suggest that
the typical SN Ia on this galaxy can reach mag 15.5 if there is no
extinction. But the Galaxtic extinction is comparably large (A_V \sim
0.7), so it seems not become brighter than mag 16 if it is not
intrinsically bright.
Sincerely Yours,
