Hello Doug, my strategy is quite simple, I use my 9x60 binoculars, facilitated by many of the maps provided by SkyAtlas 2000.0 (Wil Tirion)
which features stars down to magnitude 8.5. This is all done visually. Also I do some piggyback photography using my Minolta SLR Camera & motor driven 8"SCT, particularly along the plane of the Milkyway. If i scan the colour negatives, you can put one negative over another previously taken one to look at under magnification. Simply slide your new negative against your reference over to the right less than 1mm, genuine stars will appear double, a nova should appear on it's own on your latest negative! No ccd's yet i'm afraid.

Keith:
Do you know approximately how many hours you have observed visually and how many square degrees you have surveyed photographically?  Have you had any novae discoveries?  I am trying to get a feel for how much searching is required before a discover.
Thanks,
Doug West
