[vsnet-campaign-news 219] News from VSNET

                       *** News from VSNET ***

A. Takao discovered a nova in Ophiucus.

For more detail information about these objects,
see below, "VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary" of the last week.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

VSNET (Variable Star Network) is an international variable star observing
network, covering various areas of novae, supernovae, cataclysmic variables
(CVs), X-ray transients, and other classical eruptive, pulsating, and
eclipsing variables. VSNET is one of invited contributing organizations
to the SkyPub AstroAlert system.

The "News from VSNET", mainly focusing on recent remarkable activities of
CVs and related systems, is issued on a weekly basis, except on occasions
of extremely urgent or transient events.

Please refer to the VSNET Home Page for more details of events and
objects listed.

       VSNET Home Page: http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/

VSNET provides a number of mailing lists, on which various news and topics
are discussed.  Subscriptions to the VSNET mailing lists are free of charge;
please refer to the instruction on the above page if a reader needs more
information of the list structure.

CCD observations of such targets are a relatively easy task for a 20-40cm
telescope; simply take as many CCD frames (with exposure times 10-30 sec)
as possible, spanning several hours per night. The only requirements are
the weather and your patience! If you need more help on the observing
technique, please feel free to ask on the vsnet-campaign list.

We would sincerely appreciate volunteers who would join the VSNET
Collaboration team to study the wonders of these exotic variable stars.
To join the VSNET campaign collaborative list, send an e-mail to

         vsnet-adm@kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp (VSNET administrator)

with a line "SUBSCRIBE vsnet-campaign."
(VSNET campaign members are strongly recommended to subscribe to vsnet-alert
at the same time).

VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary

*** Last week news ***

(new targets)
  Nova in Oph 2003	(R.A. = 17h19m14s.086, Dec = -27d22'35".21)

    A. Takao reported the detection of a likely new object on his two
unfiltered CCD images taken on July 10 (11.4C mag) and 16 (11.2C
mag). According to ASAS-3 public data, this object was recorded to
brighten on June 15. After maintaining magnitudes of V=11.0-11.5,
the object apparently reached a maximum of V=10.6 on June 26
(vsnet-campaign-nova 1327, 1324). V. Tabur reported that it can be
detected on images after 2003 March (vsnet-campaign-nova 1325),
which implies that it is a slow nova (vsnet-campaign-nova 1326).
  G. Bolt performed time-series photometry, which showed 0.1-mag slow
  modulations (vsnet-campaign-nova 1335). W. Liller performed
spectroscopy on July 18, and reported the presence of strong H_alpha
emission, which means that it is a genuine nova (vsnet-campaign-nova
1345). C. Buil also reported a strong H_alpha emission in the
  spectrum taken on July 19 (vsnet-campaign-nova 1346, 1348). The
  object is still bright (vsnet-campaign-nova 1341, 1349, 1328, 1334,
  1329, 1330, 1331, 1333, 1336, 1338, 1340, 1343, 1342, 1344, 1347).

  RU Peg (RA = 22h14m02s.58, Dec = +12d42'11".4)

The object experienced a very bright outburst reaching 9th mag
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 3867).

  SS UMi (RA = 15h51m22s.4, Dec = +71d45'11".1)

A possible superoutburst was reported by G. Poyner on July 15
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 3869).

  V380 Oph (RA = 17h50m13s.6, Dec = +06d05'29")

The NL-type star V380 Oph is reported brighter than usual
  (~14.4mag). Probably worth following (vsnet-campaign-nl 133).

(continuous targets)
  SN 2003gm (RA = 13h52m51s.72, Dec = -01d06'39".2)

The European Supernova Collaboation team reported in CBET No. 30
that the spectrum of SN 2003gm taken on Jul. 16.87 UT resembles to
that of dim SNe II, or luminous blue variables (vsnet-campaign-sn 658).

  RZ Sge (RA = 20h03m18s.49, Dec = +17d02'52".6)

The superoutburst is still ongoing (vsnet-campaign-dn 3868, 3873).

  AO 0235+16 (RA = 02h38m39s.0, Dec = 16d37'05")

    J. Webb reported that the object was V = 17.4, R = 16.8, and I =
16.0 on July 10, which indicates that the object is now possibly in
  a brightening phase (vsnet-campaign-blazar 302).
