                       *** News from VSNET ***

Some new cataclysmic variables have been reported.
The superoutburst of BF Ara still continues.

For more detail information about these objects,
see below, "VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary" of the last week.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

VSNET (Variable Star Network) is an international variable star observing
network, covering various areas of novae, supernovae, cataclysmic variables
(CVs), X-ray transients, and other classical eruptive, pulsating, and
eclipsing variables. VSNET is one of invited contributing organizations
to the SkyPub AstroAlert system.

The "News from VSNET", mainly focusing on recent remarkable activities of
CVs and related systems, is issued on a weekly basis, except on occasions
of extremely urgent or transient events.

Please refer to the VSNET Home Page for more details of events and
objects listed.

       VSNET Home Page: http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/

VSNET provides a number of mailing lists, on which various news and topics
are discussed.  Subscriptions to the VSNET mailing lists are free of charge;
please refer to the instruction on the above page if a reader needs more
information of the list structure.

CCD observations of such targets are a relatively easy task for a 20-40cm
telescope; simply take as many CCD frames (with exposure times 10-30 sec)
as possible, spanning several hours per night. The only requirements are
the weather and your patience! If you need more help on the observing
technique, please feel free to ask on the vsnet-campaign list.

We would sincerely appreciate volunteers who would join the VSNET
Collaboration team to study the wonders of these exotic variable stars.
To join the VSNET campaign collaborative list, send an e-mail to

         vsnet-adm@kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp (VSNET administrator)

with a line "SUBSCRIBE vsnet-campaign."
(VSNET campaign members are strongly recommended to subscribe to vsnet-alert
at the same time).

VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary

*** Last week news ***

(new targets)
  V982 Oph (RA = 17h52m37s.86, Dec = +07d32'52".4)

According to IBVS 5302, V982 Oph is shown to be a dwarf nova
(Antipin and Samus). Please monitor this object, and make
time-series photometry when a new outburst is detected
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2741).

  New radio-selected CV in Sextans

    H. Bond reported: During the FIRST ("Faint Images of the Radio Sky
at Twenty Centimeters") 1.4 GHz radio survey, using the Very Large
Array, the radio source FIRST J102347.6+003841 has been identified
with a previously unknown 17th-mag Galactic cataclysmic variable
(CV). Spectroscopic observations suggest that the CV is a DQ Her-
or AM Her-type magnetic CV, as are the handful of other CVs that are
known to be radio sources. CCD photometry obtained at Kitt Peak
shows rapid flickering and slower variations with a peak-to-peak
amplitude of at least 1 mag, but has not as yet revealed the orbital
  period (vsnet-campaign-polar 8).

  WR104 (RA = 18h02m04s.0, Dec = -23d37'41")

The object is gradually brightening. K. Haseda reported 12.3p and
  12.2p mag on August 9 and 13, respectively (vsnet-campaign-wr 2).

  SN 2002eo (RA = 01h52m55s.18, Dec = +36d03'22".2)

The LOTOSS team discovered SN 2002eo on images taken on August 20
when it was 18.0mag. NGC 710, the host galaxy of SN 2002eo, is a
disturbed spiral galaxy. The expected maximum for typical SN Ia is
   mag about 16.5 (vsnet-campaign-sn 465).

  V425 Cas (RA = 23h03m38s.60, Dec = +53d17'10".8 )

Observations by T. Kinnunen show variations between 15.6:-14.6 mag
  in this ~20 days (vsnet-campaign-nl 96).

(continuous targets)
  TK5 (RA = 19h17m26s.5, Dec = +37d10'41")

The object experienced an outburst (14.7mag on August 19 by
  T. Kinnunen) (vsnet-campaign-dn 2743).

  WR106 (RA = 18h04m43s.5, Dec = -21d09'29")

    K. Haseda reported a minor fading (<12.6p mag) on August 5
  (vsnet-campaign-wr 3).

  BX Mon (RA = 07h25m22s.7, Dec = -03d35'50")

A brightening to 9th mag was reported. The present level of
  brightness was last recorded in 1999 (vsnet-campaign-symbio 25, 26).

  V1504 Cyg (RA = 19h28m55.87s, Dec = +43d05'39".9)

The object has faded from the superoutburst (vsnet-campaign-dn 2728).

  Z UMi (RA = 15h02m01s.35, Dec = +83d03'48".7)

No large variation has been reported (vsnet-campaign-rcb 65).

  BF Ara (RA = 17h38m10s.40, Dec = -47d10'43".4)

The superoutburst is still ongoing (vsnet-campaign-dn 2735, 2745,
2748). T. Kato reported that combined light curves obtained by
  G. Bolt and P. Nelson yielded a superhump period of 0.0881 d, which
is slightly longer than the single-night determination. It may be
possible that BF Ara experienced a stage of rapid period evolution
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2736, 2738). With a new data set on August 21 by
  G. Bolt, T. Kato reported a revised superhump period of 0.08805(2)
  d. The mean fading rate during the present superoutburst plateau is
0.08 mag/d, which is relatively small among SU UMa-type dward novae
(vsnet-campaign-dn 2739). The profile of superhumps on August 23
has become more symmetric than before (vsnet-campaign-dn 2747).

  AH Her (RA = 16h44m09s.99, Dec = +25d15'02".1)

The object entered a standstill at about 12.5mag
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2731, 2744, 2750).

  ES Aql (RA = 19h32m21s.58, Dec = -00d11'31".2)

The slow fading continues (vsnet-campaign-rcb 61).

  DH Aql (RA = 19h26m12s.05, Dec = -10d15'21".4)

The object has faded, and no rebrightening was observed
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2737).

  delta Sco (RA = 16h00m19s.9, Dec = -22d37'17")

    D. West reported that the spectrum on 08/15/02 shows the H alpha
  emission feature (vsnet-campaign-be 199).

  V803 Cen (RA = 13h23m44.5s, Dec = -41d44'30".1)

A bright outburst to 12.5mag was detected by R. Stubbings on
August 21 (vsnet-campaign-dn 2742). The object was still bright on
  August 24 and 25 (vsnet-campaign-dnn 2746, 2749).

  DY Per (RA = 02h35m17s.12, Dec = +56d08'44".7)

The object is now gradually brightening (vsnet-campaign-rcb 64).

  IX Dra (RA = 18h12m32s.2, Dec = +67d04'41")

The bright state is reported to continue since August 12. It may
  be a superoutburst (vsnet-campaign-dn 2740).

  MV Lyr (RA = 19h07m15s.93, Dec = +44d01'10".7)

The faint state continues (vsnet-campaign-nl 95).

  V838 Mon (RA = 07h04m04s.816, Dec = -03d50'50".94)

    S. Kiyota reported 10.66C mag on August 20 (vsnet-campaign-v838mon 374).

  V348 Sgr (RA = 18h40m19s.94, Dec = -22d54'29".1)

The bright state continues (vsnet-campaign-rcb 63).

  omicron Cet (RA = 02h19m20s.67, Dec = -02d58'27".1)

The object is now around maximum (vsnet-campaign-mira 31).
