*** News from VSNET *** The microquasar V4641 Sgr seems to be still active. Some short flares were reported. For more detail information about these objects, see below, "VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary" of the last week. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- VSNET (Variable Star Network) is an international variable star observing network, covering various areas of novae, supernovae, cataclysmic variables (CVs), X-ray transients, and other classical eruptive, pulsating, and eclipsing variables. VSNET is one of invited contributing organizations to the SkyPub AstroAlert system. The "News from VSNET", mainly focusing on recent remarkable activities of CVs and related systems, is issued on a weekly basis, except on occasions of extremely urgent or transient events. Please refer to the VSNET Home Page for more details of events and objects listed. VSNET Home Page: http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/ VSNET provides a number of mailing lists, on which various news and topics are discussed. Subscriptions to the VSNET mailing lists are free of charge; please refer to the instruction on the above page if a reader needs more information of the list structure. CCD observations of such targets are a relatively easy task for a 20-40cm telescope; simply take as many CCD frames (with exposure times 10-30 sec) as possible, spanning several hours per night. The only requirements are the weather and your patience! If you need more help on the observing technique, please feel free to ask on the vsnet-campaign list. We would sincerely appreciate volunteers who would join the VSNET Collaboration team to study the wonders of these exotic variable stars. To join the VSNET campaign collaborative list, send an e-mail to vsnet-adm@kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp (VSNET administrator) with a line "SUBSCRIBE vsnet-campaign." (VSNET campaign members are strongly recommended to subscribe to vsnet-alert at the same time). Regards, Taichi Kato On behalf of the VSNET administrator team ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following was issued on July 22, 2002, as VSNET campaign circulation 1329 [Note a large part of detailed information is posted to vsnet-campaign sub-lists]. VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary *** Last week news *** (new targets) RX And (RA = 01h04m35s.55, Dec = +41d17'58".0) A possible beginning of a standstill was suspected (vsnet-campaign-dn 2644), but P. Schmeer reported 13.9mag on July 19 which indicates the object is not in a standstill (vsnet-campaign-dn 2653, 2654). V630 Cyg (RA = 21h34m59s.21, Dec = +40d40'18".5) An outburst (14.9mag) was detected by M. Simonsen on July 13. The outburst was confirmed on July 14 and 15 without rapid fading. It may be a superoutburst (vsnet-campaign-dn 2647). TU Crt (RA = 11h03m36s.50, Dec = -21d37'45".6) As reported by R. Stubbings on July 18, the SU UMa-type dwarf nova TU Crt experienced an outburst (12.6mag). The last reported superoutburst was in 2001 April (vsnet-campaign-dn 2651). ES Aql (RA = 19h32m21s.58, Dec = -00d11'31".2) Reported observations show the object entered 12th mag, which may indicate a slow fading of the object (vsnet-campaign-rcb 49). (continuous targets) V1141 Aql (RA = 19h37m10s.01, Dec = +02d35'59".2) The object is fading from superoutburst (vsnet-campaign-dn 2645). V1504 Cyg (RA = 19h28m55.87s, Dec = +43d05'39".9) The object was reported to be bright at about 15mag during July 13-16, which may indicate a superoutburst (vsnet-campaign-dn 2643). V348 Sgr (RA = 18h40m19s.94, Dec = -22d54'29".1) The bright state at about 13.2mag still continues (vsnet-campaign-rcb 48). omicron Cet (RA = 02h19m20s.67, Dec = -02d58'27".1) A further brightening to 3.4mag was reported (vsnet-campaign-mira 27). MV Lyr (RA = 19h07m15s.93, Dec = +44d01'10".7) The object is still faint (vsnet-campaign-nl 93). PU Vul (RA = 20h21m13s.30, Dec = +21d34'18".0) The faint state at about 12mag continues (vsnet-campaign-symbio 22). V1008 Her (RA = 18h05m46s.31, Dec = +31d40'18".1) The fading from outburst was observed (vsnet-campaign-dn 2649). V503 Cyg (RA = 20h27m15s.61, Dec = +43d41'45".5) A new outburst to 14.3mag was detected on July 19. The recurrence time of recent outbursts is unusually short (vsnet-campaign-dn 2655, 2656). V4641 Sgr (RA = 18h19m21s.6, Dec = -25d24'25") While moderate variations seem to be present, no short "flash"-like flare was observed until July 18 when M. Linnolt reported a small flare to 12.7mag (vsnet-campaign-v4641sgr 146, 148, 149, 150, 151, 152). The light curves on July 16 obtained by S. Kiyota and K. Torii also show a number of sudden brightenings by ~0.5 mag, which look like real as compared with error statistics (vsnet-campaign-v4641sgr 153, 154). No short-term variation has been reported after those observations (vsnet-campaign-v4641sgr 155, 156). DY Per (RA = 02h35m17s.12, Dec = +56d08'44".7) The faint state at about 13.8-13.9mag continues (vsnet-campaign-rcb 47). V803 Cen (RA = 13h23m44.5s, Dec = -41d44'30".1) The object is still in a faint state (vsnet-campaign-dn 2652). V2540 Oph (RA = 17h37m34s.36, Dec = -16d23'18".4) The smooth fading continues (vsnet-campaign-nova 942). V Sge (RA = 20h20m14s.75, Dec = +21d06'09".0) The fading continues (vsnet-campaign-nl 92). IX Dra (RA = 18h12m32s.2, Dec = +67d04'41") The object was reported to be in outburst during July 12 (14.9mag) - 14 (15.5mag), which may indicate a superoutburst (vsnet-campaign-dn 2646). NSV 10934 (RA = 18h40m52s.26, Dec = -83d43'10".24) An outburst (12.7mag) was reported by R. Stubbings on July 18 (vsnet-campaign-dn 2650). AM Her (RA = 18h16m13s.4, Dec = +49d52'03".1) The object is still faint at about 15mag (vsnet-campaign-polar 7). *** Future schedule *** Observations of AM Her with HST B. Gaensicke reported that they have Hubble Space Telescope observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable AM Herculis scheduled for July 11/12. Close monitoring of the activity of the star throughout the next 3 weeks would be very helpful for the interpretation of the HST data.
