VSNET (Variable Star Network) is an international variable star observing
network, covering various areas of novae, supernovae, cataclysmic variables
(CVs), X-ray transients, and other classical eruptive, pulsating, and
eclipsing variables. VSNET is one of invited contributing organizations
to the SkyPub AstroAlert system.

The "News from VSNET", mainly focusing on recent remarkable activities of
CVs and related systems, is issued on a weekly basis, except on occasions
of extremely urgent or transient events.

Please refer to the VSNET Home Page for more details of events and
objects listed.

       VSNET Home Page: http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/

VSNET provides a number of mailing lists, on which various news and topics
are discussed.  Subscriptions to the VSNET mailing lists are free of charge;
please refer to the instruction on the above page if a reader needs more
information of the list structure.

CCD observations of such targets are a relatively easy task for a 20-40cm
telescope; simply take as many CCD frames (with exposure times 10-30 sec)
as possible, spanning several hours per night. The only requirements are
the weather and your patience! If you need more help on the observing
technique, please feel free to ask on the vsnet-campaign list.

We would sincerely appreciate volunteers who would join the VSNET
Collaboration team to study the wonders of these exotic variable stars.

VSNET Weekly Campaign Summary

*** Last week news ***

(new targets)
  KL Dra (RA = 19h24m38s.14, Dec = +59d41'47".1)

    M. Wood informed that the helium dwarf nova KL Dra appeared
to be undergoing a superoutburst. The object was observed in
outburst in 2001 July-August. T. Kato reported that the supercycle
  could be around 300 d or its 1/N (vsnet-campaign-dn 2555).
  T. Kato reported a confirmation of the outburst by K. Matsumoto
  on June 14 (vsnet-campaign-dn 2560). G. Masi and U. Tagliaferri
also confirmed and observed the object, and reported R=16.2 on
  June 16 (vsnet-campaign-dn 2563). T. Kato reported the detection
of superhumps with amplitudes of 0.1-0.2mag on June 16
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2565, 2572). G. Masi reported a significant
fading (0.05mag during 3+ hours) during their run on June 16
(vsnet-campaign-dn 2574, 2575). The fading was confirmed by
  observations at Kyoto (vsnet-campaign-dn 2577). Follow-up
  observations are still highly recommended.

  EP Car (RA = 10h28m23s.21, Dec = -58d57'58".6)

As reported by R. Stubbings on June 13, this SU UMa candidate
experienced an outburst to 14.5mag. The last outburst was
reported in 2001 April (vsnet-campaign-dn 2556). The outburst
still continued on June 15 without rapid fading
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2568).

  FW CMa (RA = 07h24m40s.11, Dec = -16d12'05".2)

    S. Otero reported a correct amplitude of this GCAS-type
  variable of V= 5.00 - 5.38 (vsnet-campaign-be 188).

  SN 2002dj (RA = 13h13m00s.34, Dec = -19d31'08".7)

The host galaxy of SN 2002dj is NGC 5018, an elliptical galaxy
affected by some Galactic extinction (A_V = 0.317). The position
of SN is about 9" west and 3" south of the nucleus of NGC 5018.
The expected maximum of typical SN Ia is mag about 14.8
(vsnet-campaign-sn 438). IAUC 7919 informed that the Padova team
took a spectrum of SN 2002dj on June 14.15 UT at La Silla, which
shows that it is of type Ia well before (~10 days) maximum light
  (vsnet-campaign-sn 439).

  V348 Sgr (RA = 18h40m19s.94, Dec = -22d54'29".1)

    R. Stubbings detected a brightening to 14.0mag of this object
  on June 13 (vsnet-campaign-rcb 42).

  CAL 86 (RA = 05h46m18s.2, Dec = -68d35'37")

According to Schmidtke et al., the X-ray source CAL 86 in the
direction of the LMC is confirmed to be a short-period cataclysmic
variable with a short period (0.0660 d). The object reaches mag
14 at maximum (amplitude 5 mag). The light curve presented is
typical of an SU UMa-type superoutburst. Please monitor this object,
and make time-series photometry when a new outburst is detected
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2561).

  AM Her (RA = 18h16m13s.4, Dec = +49d52'03".1)

The object seems to pass the deep minimum and to be possibly
  brightening now (vsnet-campaign-polar 4).

  eta Car (RA = 10h45m03s.65, Dec = -59d41'03".7)

    S. Otero commented on a possibility that eta Car will again
brighten and become brighter than 5.0mag in the end of this
August (vsnet-campaign-sdor 16). Close monitoring is encouraged.

  Suspect object near NGC 6946

A suspected new object was reported near NGC 6946 on June 13,
however, no bright object was confirmed later
  (vsnet-campaign-unknown 72, 73, 75, 71, 76, 74, 77, 78, 79,
  80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86).

(continuous targets)
  V877 Ara (RA = 17h16m58s.80, Dec = -65d32'58".6)

    T. Kato reported a superhump period of 0.08458(3) d using
the light curves obtained by S. Walker, G. Bolt and R. Santallo
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2546, 2548). Superhump periods were variable,
and the inferred period change was reported to be an order of
-2x10^(-4), which is the largest period change ever observed in
  long-period SU UMa-type systems (vsnet-campaign-dn 2566).
  The superoutburst continues (vsnet-campaign-dn 2545, 2550, 2557,
  2562, 2571, 2576).

  V729 Sgr (RA = 19h16m49s.15, Dec = -26d14'33".2)

The fading from the outburst was observed on June 11
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2553).

  V Sge (RA = 20h20m14s.75, Dec = +21d06'09".0)

The object further brightened (vsnet-campaign-nl 87).

  AH Her (RA = 16h44m09s.99, Dec = +25d15'02".1)

The standstill was terminated (vsnet-campaign-dn 2573).

  UY Cen (RA = 13h16m31s.90, Dec = -44d42'14".9)

    S. Otero commented on different color response and observing
technics, which should be noticed when observers estimate magnitudes
  of the object (vsnet-campaign-rcb 40, 41).

  SN 2002dh (RA = 15h24m49s.35, Dec = -22d45'57".7)

According to IAUC 7917, this SN turned out to be of type II.
The recession velocity of the host galaxy is measured as 3900 km/s,
which indicate that SN 2002dh has a normal luminosity as of SN II
  (vsnet-campaign-sn 437).

  V359 Cen (RA = 11h58m15s.29, Dec = -41d46'07".9)

    The superoutburst finished (vsnet-campaign-dn 2559).

  QW Ser (RA = 15h26m13s.99, Dec = +08d18'03".8)

    T. Kato reported that the light curve on June 9 showed the
remarkable evolution of sub-structures of superhumps. The most
prominent feature was likely "late superhumps" between superhump
maxima (vsnet-campaign-dn 2544). The object has faded from
  the superoutburst since June 13 (vsnet-campaign-dn 2552, 2558).

  Z Cha (RA = 08h07m16s.29, Dec = -76d32'20".9)

The fading from the superoutburst was confirmed on June 15
  (vsnet-campaign-dn 2551, 2569).

  V4641 Sgr (RA = 18h19m21s.6, Dec = -25d24'25")

The object has remained at quiescent level, but possibly still
  active (vsnet-campaign-v4641sgr 93, 94, 96). The observation on
June 13 at Ouda shows a relatively calm light curve
  (vsnet-campaign-v4641sgr 95).

  delta Sco (RA = 16h00m19s.9, Dec = -22d37'17")

    S. Otero reported 1.73mag on June 15 (vsnet-campaign-be 189, 190).

  V803 Cen (RA = 13h23m44.5s, Dec = -41d44'30".1)

The object rebrightened to 13.2mag on June 15 (vsnet-campaign-dn
  2554, 2567).

  CR Boo (RA = 13h48m55s.42, Dec = +07d57'30".3)

The object is still bright at about 14.0mag (vsnet-campaign-dn 2570).

  V2051 Oph (RA = 17h08m19.1s, Dec = -25d48m31.1s)

The object is reported to be still rather active
  (vsnet-campaign-v2051oph 22, 23).

  RS Oph (RA = 17h50m13s.56, Dec = -06d42'30".6)

The object was reported to further brighten (vsnet-campaign-nova
  938, vsnet-campaign-symbio 17).

  omega CMa (RA = 07h14m48s.70, Dec = -26d46'22".1)

    S. Otero reported that the object further brightened over
3.6mag, breaking probably its own record (vsnet-campaign-be 187).
