[vsnet-campaign-news 59] AstroAlert: Possible Nova in Aquila

Possible Nova in Aquila
****************************************************************
We have been informed by Guy Hurst via The Astronomer (TA) Electronic
Cicular No. 1633 that Mike Collins discovered a new variabile star
on his patrol films. The star was given a temporary designation of
TAV J1907+117. The discovery of this variable star was widely announced
on May 17 via this TA circular and VSNET messages. The object was
reported to be at mag 10.9 on May 11.988 UT, and there was a suspicious
detection on Apr. 25.1 UT at mag 12.1. Upon this information, the
VSNET Collaboration started analyzing the data, and found that this
object is unlikely a large-amplitude Mira star. Noting that this object
could be a nova, the VSNET team made a world-wide appeal to observe
this star. On the other hand, Guy Hurst and Mike Collins made a search
on their archival photographs, and found nothing at the corresponding
position. The object was then announced as a possible nova in Aql
in IAUC 7627.
The coordinates of the object is:
19h 07m 28s.41 (J2000.0)
+11o 44' 45".8
The object was reported at V=12.6 on May 16.966 UT, which may suggest
a rather rapid fading. We have prepared a VSNET page at the following
URL. The page contains a CCD image taken at Kyoto University, as a part
of VSNET Collaboration, on May 17.

We have been undertaking on photometric campaigns on several super-
outbursting dwarf novae and peculiar variable stars. News and call for
observations on these objects will be issued on our regular weekly
"News from VSNET" bulletins. Those who immediately need information
should make an access to the VSNET website, and click on VSNET campaign
list.

VSNET (Variable Star Network) is an international variable star observing
network, covering various areas of novae, supernovae, cataclysmic variables
(CVs), X-ray transients, and other classical eruptive, pulsating, and
eclipsing variables. VSNET is one of invited contributing organizations
to the SkyPub AstroAlert system.

CCD observations of such targets are a relatively easy task for a 20-40cm
telescope; simply take as many CCD frames (with exposure times 10-30 sec)
as possible, spanning several hours per night. The only requirements are
the weather and your patience! If you need more help on the observing
technique, please feel free to ask on the vsnet-campaign list.
We would sincerely appreciate volunteers who would join the VSNET
Collaboration team to study the wonders of these exotic variable stars.
To join the VSNET campaign collaborative list, send an e-mail to
