  I have examined DSS images in this region, and noticed that the star
6" WNW of the suggested V601 Sco in Downes CV atlas, i.e. the very red
star mentioned above, seems to be indeed a variable.

  There are 2 images in DSS 1 (SERC quick-V) and 4 images in DSS 2
(AAO SES and AAO SR, all are R images). The star in DSS 1 images show
a significant change in brightness:

1988 Apr. 15   V ~ 15.5
1988 Apr. 22   V ~ 14.4

On the other hand, in DSS 2 R images, it does not show such a
significant change;

1991 Aug. 06   R ~ 12.8
1993 Apr. 20   R ~ 12.8
1997 Apr. 02   R ~ 13.0
1997 Apr. 30   R ~ 13.5

Sincerely,
