Re: [vsnet-id 650] about V1363 Cyg > You will find the same identification of V1363 Cyg in the new GCVS > version on the web (www.sai.msu.su/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs). As Prof. Saums may know, special care should be taken when identifying eruptive, cataclysmic and unusual variable stars based on published materials. Variable star researchers often tend to identify the reported vairable star with the "nearest visible POSS/DSS object". Although these identification of Mira-type variables can often be confirmed by colors, the situation is not always clear in CVs/novae etc. In recent cases, CG CMa, V699 Oph, V1114 Cyg etc. were found to have wrong identifications in spite of the quality of the original publication. Readers may remember that almost all recently recognized recurrent novae (through the detection of a new outburst) were given wrong identifications in the literature. Astrometric identification has a great advantage especially when the original discoverer did not yield accurate astrometry of the variable. Regards, Taichi Kato
