Dear friends: As its neighbouring omega CMa, kappa Canis Majoris is undergoing a major eruption. The light curve is displaying an omega CMa-type outburst= variability cycles in the order of tens of days with an overall brightening trend. (the same as in delta Scorpii too) The star has reached V= 3.5 and that's very bright !! The maximum ever recorded for kappa CMa was back in 1990-1991, when the Hipparcos satellite observed it at V= 3.43. The variability range in the GCVS has been out of business for years now (V= 3.78 - 3.96). Recently the star has been at 3.7 - 3.8 when at minimum, meaning that the mean magnitude has been changing. The cycles seem to be around 15 days and if the trend continues the weeks to come will show us a very nice show. Will kappa CMa become brighter than ver before?? Cheers, Sebastian. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://vsnet.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.319 / Virus Database: 178 - Release Date: 29/01/02
