Dear friends: Omega Canis Majoris is in a bright outburst. The outburst started by the end of march 2001, when the star brightened slowly but steadily from 4.1. When the observing season came to an end at the beginning of June, the star was at 3.82. Last week, a colleague of mine, Enzo de Bernardini (BED) from Martinez, Buenos Aires, Argentina, reported that the star was at 3.6. I observed it last night and can confirm that omega CMa is in a full outburst: CMAomega 20011019.229 JD2452201.729 3.67 OSE You can see my lightcurve of the star and Hipparcos' lightcurve for the outburst of 1992-1993 (there is a gap in the same point as in the current outburst!). They are at: http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Curvas_Ome_CMa.htm There is also a chart to observe the variable: http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Carta_ome_CMa.htm If my predictions based on (but with T0 according to the maxima observed visually recently) Harmanec's 34.7 days -period are OK, the star may brighten a little bit more and reach its maximum ever in 20 days. (or maybe it has already reached it when out of sight !!:-(( ) Let's see. Cheers, Sebastian. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://vsnet.grisoft.com).
