In response to ATEL #90, unfiltered CCD observations were performed at the Bronberg Observatory / CBA Pretoria around the reported star region on 17 sep 2003 around UT 18:36. An image with limiting magnitude around 19.5 CR was obtained from co-adding five individual images. This image was visually inspected against those from the DSS generation 2 /red and NIR. No new source was apparent in the circular error box with radius 2' around the reported position. The known ROSAT source near this position 1RXS_J175428.3-262035 0.079 at 175428.2 -262034 (2000.0) as reported by T Kato in vsnet-campaign-xray 261, did not show any obvious brightening. Two sources with nominal brightness well beyound 20R showed distinctly brighter on the image. Their respective positions vs the UCAC1 frame: Source 1: 17 54 24.88 -26 20 40.5 (less than 1 arcmin W of the ROSAT source) Source 2: 17 54 33.63 -26 22 30.2 The estimated CR magnitudes are 19.0 and 19.4 for sources 1 and 2 respectively. The absolute uncertainty is around 0.5CR. Due to their faintness these sources have no USNO-A2.0 counterparts. No statements or claims can be made at this time regarding which one (if any) of those brightened sources might be the optical counterpart of IGR J17544-2619, but follow up observations are intended.
