Subject: QZ Ser ID ...
John Thorstensen (Dartmouth College) reports:
The identification of QZ Ser formerly marked in the Downes live
CV atlas was incorrect. The correct ID is just northwest of the star
near the center of the circle in the atlas, and is near
15 56 54.46, +21 07 18.9 (J2000, from the coordinate
system in the DSS-II red image).
A spectrum taken of this star with the 2.4m Hiltner telescope at MDM
observatory on 2002 January 20 showed the broad H-alpha
emission characteristic of a dwarf nova at minimum light,
together with a strong contribution from a late-type secondary
star. The orbital period is therefore expected to be long,
and superhumps are not expected. However, we have just
found an example of a very short-period CV with a clearly
visible K-type companion (see Thorstensen et al.,
astrop-ph 0201487), so a search for superhumps is still
warranted. Because the identification was in doubt, it
would also be worthwhile to derive accurate coordinates
for the star in outburst.
