Because= of the crowded field and the nearly full moon, only a strong, narrow H-alpha emission line can be detected above a faint continuum with a brightness approximately 9 times that of the nearby continuum; its FWHM i= s 525 +/- 75 km/s. Because of the rarity of novae in the SMC, it is extremely urgent to obta= in high-dispersion spectrograms so that its type can be determined and abundances calculated.
