Subject: N SMC spectrum

Hola, Amigos -

Last night at UT Oct. 30.100, 2001, I obtained a low-dispersion CCD
spectrogram of the nova-like star in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Because=

of the crowded field and the nearly full moon, only a strong, narrow
H-alpha emission line can be detected above a faint continuum with a
brightness approximately 9 times that of the nearby continuum; its FWHM i=
s
525 +/- 75 km/s.

Because of the rarity of novae in the SMC, it is extremely urgent to obta=
in
high-dispersion spectrograms so that its type can be determined and
abundances calculated.

All the best to all, Bill Liller
