Subject: Poss. nova in SMC

Hola Amigos -

This is to report the discovery of a nova-like object in the Small
Magallenic Cloud found on a pair of photographs taken at UT Oct. 21.0857
and Oct. 21.0879. Its semi-accurate position is (2000) R.A. 0h 46m 27.78s,
Dec. -73d 29' 40.1" (+/- 0.7s, 1.2"). The magnitude on Kodak Tech Pan
film, no filter, was 12.1. No image down to magnitude 13.5 was seen on
Sep. 27.36 nor on any of 45 photographs taken since Sep. 2000 when active
patrol of the SMC began. A CCD observation made at UT Oct. 22.0725
revealed that its broadband V magnitude was 12.22 when compared with nearby
HD 4558. It should be noted that Harvard variable V1429 is listed as being
1.7' to the east, 21" north. Morel gives as its type "nv", non-variable, at
photographic magnitude 14.2.

Sorry about the hiatus between the two photographic searches: I was away in
the USA for part of the time, and has been more foggy than usual as of late
here in Vina del Mar.

All the best, Bill Liller
