[vsnet-alert 6720] SN 2001en in NGC 523

Dear SN watchers,

IAUC 7724 informed the KAIT discovery of nearby SN 2001en. It is
caught on the rising, and can reach mag 15.5. The host galaxy has an
odd shape.

The discovery was made on Sept 26.5 UT when the SN was mag about
17.5. It was confirmed on the next day with mag about 17.0, when it
was independently discovered by Beijing team. The location of the new
object is: R.A. = 1h25m22s.90, Decl. = +34o01'30".5 (2000.0), which is
about 6" east and 3" south of the eastern nucleus of the odd-shaped
galaxy NGC 523. Apparently it has three nuclei alines east-west, and
the SN is located the eastward of the most eastern nucleus. Probably
it is an interacting pair (or multiplet) of galaxies.

The expected maximum of the normal SN Ia on this galaxy is mag about
15.5. The remarkable rising trend suggests that it is quite young
object. Further photometry and the type determination is urged.

Sincerely Yours,
Hitoshi Yamaoka, Kyushu Univ., Japan
