[vsnet-alert 6054] SN 2001da in NGC 7780

Dear SN watchers,

A new KAIT SN discovered in the morning sky. It can reach mag 16.

According to IAUC 7658, the KAIT team discovered SN 2001da on July
9.5 at mag about 16.5, and confirmed on the next day when SN was about
0.2 mag brighter. The position is: R.A. = 23h53m32s.78, Decl. =
+8o07'02".6 (2000.0), which is about 9" east and 3" south of the
nucleus of the spiral (Sab) galaxy NGC 7780. The SN superimposed on
the eastern disk region. Because of high galactic latitude, there are
few foreground stars around it. Note that a mag 15 star at R.A. =
23h53m36s.1, Decl. = +8o08'56" (about 60" east and 110" north of NGC 7780)
is a very blue star PB 5579 = GSC 1171-1394, so please take care if
you use it as a comparison star (though I recommend not to use it).

NGC 7780 is a member of a loose group of galaxies, which includes
NGC 7778, 7779, and 7782. The recession velocity of this group is
around 5200 km/s, thus the expected maximum of typical SN Ia is about
mag 16.0 or slightly brigher.

Sincerely Yours,
