D. Li, University of California at Berkeley, on behalf of LOTOSS (cf. IAUC 7514), report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag about 17.3) on unfiltered CCD images taken on Mar 15.5 and 16.3 UT with the 0.8-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT). SN 2001XXX is located at R.A. = 13h22m26s.16, Decl. = -2o25'25".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is 1".0 east and 18".3 south of the nucleus of IC 4229. SN 2001XXX was also confirmed on an unfiltered image taken by M. Schwartz on Mar 16.4 UT with the Tenagra Observatory 0.5-m automatic telscope. A KAIT image of the same field taken on Feb 27.5 UT showed nothing at this position (limiting mag about 19.0).
