[vsnet-alert 5763] SN 2001X in NGC 5921

Dear SN watchers,

The Beijing team has discovered a bright SN in the barred-spiral
galaxy NGC 5921. It is a rising (young) type II SN.

The discovery was made on Feb. 27.8 when the new object was mag
about 17.0. It was confirmed by M. Schwartz's image on Mar 2.5 (3
days after discovery) at mag 15.2. It seems that this SN is caught in
the very early phase. The location measured using the confirmation
image is: R.A. = 15h21m55s.46, Decl. = +5o03'43".1, which is about 15"
west and 32" south of the nucleus of a face-on barred-spiral (SB(r)bc)
galaxy NGC 5921. This location is coincident to the southwestern end
point of the central bar.

The comparison sequence has been kindly supplied by B. Skiff as:

Name RA (2000) Dec GSC V B-V V-R V-I
NGC 5921 B 15 22 06.4 +05 02 44 0344-0407 10.32 0.40 0.24 0.49
NGC 5921 A 15 21 53.5 +05 03 22 0344-0738 12.01 1.21 0.65 1.28 SW edge
NGC 5921 C 15 21 50.2 +05 02 18 0344-0514 12.92 0.58 0.31 0.55
NGC 5921 b 15 21 48.6 +05 04 45 0344-0330 14.07 0.5
                                                     just off halo 2'.0 W, sl N

The SN lies on the middle point of the nucleus and the "star A".

The spectrum of this object reveals that it is of young type II.
A typical SN II on this galaxy is expected to be bright as mag 15 at
maximum, but the variety of the maximum brightness among SNe II is
extremely wide.

Sincerely Yours,
