Hello, all, While imaging an asteroid for a light-curve determination, I noticed that one of my comparison stars had taken a sudden drop in magnitude. I have now observed this star for four nights, and have seen the event a second time. While a period solution will require more observing, (the likely periods are such that they repeat at near 24-hour intervals), I need advice on how to proceed, as this is my first variable star observation. The details and a tentative light curve are on my web page at http://home.att.net/~Bob.Koff/GSC2315/GSC_4686_2315.htm I am thinking that this star may be an eclipsing binary, Algol type. So my first question would be, am I on the right track? I have tried to find a reference to this star as a variable star, and so far have found none. This may indicate that it is a previously unknown variable, or it may indicate that I don't know how to search :-) . Can someone refer me to a web site or other source of variable star data which I could search using the GSC or USNO designation for this star? Next, if this is a new variable, I am unsure as to how to report this object. Perhaps the VSNET or AAVSO members of the group could point me in the right direction, as to where to send the data and in what format. I've surfed the various web sites, but it's not clear to me how to proceed, particularly with voluminous CCD data. As I mentioned, my current results are preliminary. Should I wait to report until I have a firmer grasp of the situation? Thank you all very much. I hope the feedback generated by my inquiry will be helpful to others who find themselves, purposely or accidentally, observing variable stars.
