While observing V341 Car with binoculars this morning, I noticed that one
of my usual comparison stars was obviously fainter. The star is HIP 38226
(= PPM 356278, HR 3076, CPD -59 910) at 07h49m55s -60d03'05" (2000). This
K0 giant is listed at mag 6.72V in the Bright Star Catalogue.
But this morning between 18:27 and 19:10 UT (25 October) it was at mag
7.3v...
My previous observation would have been at about 14:21 UT on 20 October
and indicated nothing unusual about this star. I can't recall any other
events during the ~4 years I have been using HIP 38226 as a V341 Car
comparison; and the Hipparcos Photometry Annex also shows no significant
variation.
Confirmation and followup are requested. The approaching sunrise has put
a stop to further observations by me this morning.
cheers,
Fraser Farrell
