SAO 142596 (which is perhaps better designated HD 176948) appears to be a fairly red star, so it is not surprising to notice some variation. Do remember, however, the tricks one's eyes can play on you in the apparent brightness of red stars. I will note, on the other hand, that the Tycho photometry for the star indicates a range of about 0.25 mag., so it might be the case that the star is slightly variable. If so, the variations are most likely to be slow (few months timescale), and probably not an eclipsing variable, as your note suggested. \Brian
