Dear SN watchers,
The first supernova of this year is potentially bright one!
According to IAUC 7083, KAIT team has discovered SN 1999A in the Sc
galaxy NGC 5874. The reported position of new object is; R.A. =
15h07m55s.28, Decl. = +54o45'40".0 (2000.0), which is about 30" east
and 30" north from the host's nucleus. It is on the northern edge of
the outer arm, and on its neighbor (about 5" north and 1" west from
the SN), there is a faint star USNO 1425_08347636 (r=16.9, b=17.8).
Reported magnitudes of SN 1999A,
1998 07 23.3 >185 KAIT
1999 01 10.6 183:C KAIT
1999 01 11.6 182:C KAIT,
would indicate that SN 1999A is in the brightening phase.
Estimated from the recession velocity of NGC 5874 (about 3200 km
s-1), typical SNeIa on this distance will be brighter than 15 mag at
their maximum if not absorbed. The followup magnitude estimates and
spectroscopic classification are strongly urged.
Sincerely Yours,
