[vsnet-alert 1785] SN 1998bu

Dear SN fans,

After a long rainy days, we have obtained a spectrum of SN 1998bu
this night. Excitingly that it is of type Ia ! A report about this
has been submitted to CBAT some minutes before.

As noticed in IAUC 6902, SN is affected some reddening by the ISM in
both the host galaxy and our Galaxy. Reduced A_V ~ 0.6 mag, so it will
be about 11.3 or so magnitude at maximum, which is easily detected
with 20-cm telescope. Note that the prediscovery image taken at Mar
3.14 shows this supernova (thanks to Skiff and Faranda), so now is at
least 12 days after explosion.

Followup observations in any wavelength will hopefully give the key
to understand the nature of SNeIa.

Sincerely Yours,
