Dear all,
SN 1998an, which had apparently shown a great brightening (noted on
[vsnet-alert 1669] and isn_chat on Apr. 13), is now at a normal
brightness as it is SN Ia at the distance estimated from its recession
velocity.
The compilation of reported magnitudes of SN 1998an:
Apr 6.871 15.3: C Arbour IAUC6871 (discovery image)
Apr 8.792 15.6 V Hanzl IAUC6877
Apr 11.819 15.6 V Hanzl IAUC6877
Apr 11.880 14.6: mv Poyner vsnet
Apr 13.815 15.7 V Hanzl IAUC6877
Apr 14.856 15.6 V Hanzl IAUC6877
Apr 15.140 15.4: mv King vsnet (AAVSO SS Aur seq.)
Apr 15.883 15.5: mv Poyner vsnet (GSC seq.)
On Apr 15.5UT, Dr. Ayani, Bisei Astronomical Observatory, Japan,
has obtained the spectrum of SN 1998an and it shows that this SN is
of type Ia around maximum. This result had submitted to IAUC.
Best wishes,
