According to IAUC No. 6605 (1997 Mar. 27), A. Iyudin and F. Haberl
reported their detection of an outburst of the ultrasoft X-ray transient
GRO J0422+32 = V518 Per (Nova Per 1992) by the All-Sky Monitor on RXTE
between 1996 Nov. 18 and 1997 Jan. 15.
Visual observations reported to vsnet-obs (by G. Poyner and T. Watanabe)
set an upper limit of mv=14.9 in optical at the moment of this X-ray
re-brightening.
This X-ray transient showed a long-lasting X-ray and optical outburst
in 1992, followed by two mini-outbursts similar to what were observed in
EG Cnc. Serveral authors have suspected this object to contain a compact
object either a low-mass black hole or a neutron star or something(?)
whose mass is close to the upper limit of a stable neutron star.
(Deep) observations are still encouraged.
