IAUC No. 6556 (1997 Feb. 8) reports the discovery of an apparent supernova in NGC 4675 by W.-d. Li et al. (Beijing Astronomical Observatory). SN 1997Y 12h 45m 31s.40 (J2000.0) +54o 44' 17".0 (7".5W, 1".6N of the galaxy nucleus: IAUC 6556; 3".8W, 1".7N: D. Kim, IAUC 6557) The object rose form mag 14.8 on Feb. 2 to 14.4 on Feb. 7. A. V. Filippenko et al. and P. Garnavich et al. have independently confirmed the object to be a supernova of type Ia, close to maximum light (IAUC 6557). Follow-up observations are encourgaed.
