Subject: EG Cnc: a new close encounter of the TOAD/SXT kind

We would like to point out to the vsnet community how the recent
outburst of EG Cnc can be understood in terms of its membership
as a TOAD and its relation to the SXTs.
In our May 10 ApJ Letter (Kuulkers et al. 1996, ApJ 462, L87) we reported
on the close resemblance between the TOADs and the (Soft) X-ray Transients
(SXT). The recent outburst light curve of the TOAD EG Cnc (compiled from 
VSNET and AAVSO reports) is a wonderful case in point. 
The close resemblance of outburst frequency and amplitude of the TOADs with 
the lightcurve of SXTs, provides important methods to study accretion
disk structures. 

One of the important finds in our paper is the connection between 
the plateau/halt/glitch during the beginning of the main outburst and the 
appearance of superhumps. This is discussed in detail as to how it
relates to accretion disk models in Howell et al. 1996, AJ, 111, 2367.
The start of the outburst of EG Cnc was near
Nov 30-Dec 1 (vsnet-alert 599). The reports to VSNET showed superhumps 
had fully grown at around Dec 7-8 (vsnet-alerts 615, 616, 618, 619). 
Interesting are the observations of Patterson and colleagues (vsnet-alert 610)
and Matsumoto (vsnet-alert 613), who reported a period of ~0.057-0.058 days 
for low-amplitude "humps" between Dec 1-3, which faded during Dec 4-5
(vsnet-alert 610). (Similar type "early" superhumps have been seen in WZ
Sge and AL Com - see Howell et al. 1996 referenced above.) 
The development of (probably) true superhumps, sensed by 
Kato (vsnet-alert 612), started around Dec 5, with a period of 0.0606 days 
(vsnet-alert 615). Later reports by others (vsnet-alerts 616, 618, 619) 
confirm this period. The 0.0606 day period is 3-4% longer than 0.057-0.0582 
day, which for SU UMa stars is similar to the difference between orbital 
period and superhump period. It could be, therefore, that the 0.057-0.058 day 
period is close to the orbital period, as similar features are seen in other 
TOAD outbursts at the orbital period.

We conclude that the superhumps started at around 6-7 days after the start 
of the outburst. A careful look at the light curve of EG Cnc reveals a kind of 
standstill or small glitch 6-7 days after the start of the outburst. Moreover, 
such a halt was also inferred from the observations reported in IBVS 2401 and
2926 by Huruhata (7-8 days after the start of the outburst), see vsnet-alert 
612. Thus, the standstill/glitch/halt occurs simultaneously with the 
appearance of superhumps. This is as predicted and discussed in the
above papers.

Now the amazing thing is that the peaks of the rebrightenings are 6-7 days
apart (see e.g. AAVSO Newsflash 90); this is roughly SIMILAR to the appearance 
of the glitches/standstill/halt and/or superhumps!!!! 
This is exciting; we found (see our ApJ Letter) that the timescales 
of the appearance of glitches/standstill/halt after the start of the main
outburst and/or superhumps, and the time between rebrightenings are roughly 
similar and related in the well observed TOADs and SXTs. 
EG Cnc is now even a stronger case, with well observed rebrightenings! 
This means that one can PREDICT the timescale between rebrightenings
based on the start of the glitches/standstill/halt and/or superhumps....

We note, that if one overlays the data points of Huruhata the last
firm measurement of V~14.1 could be in fact part of a rebrightening of
the 1977 superoutburst.
