[vsnet-alert 592] rare outburst of CH UMa

The long-period SS Cyg-type dwarf nova CH UMa is undergoing a major
outburst as indicated by the following observations reported to vsnet-obs.

1996 Nov. 20.960 13.6 G. Poyner
          21.042 13.5 G. Poyner
          21.085 13.5 G. Poyner
          22.7472 12.9 M. Westlund

This dwarf nova is unique in that it usually shows a slow rise to
maximum -- probably due to its long orbital period (0.343 d). Some of bright
outbursts may reach V ~ 11. Searches for 'strange' long-period QPO signals,
as were observed during the rise of the recent outburst of GK Per, might be
fruitful. CCD observers (esp. in northern countries) are encouraged to
follow this variable as long as possible.

The last outburst occurred in 1995 Apr. - May, when the variable reached
V ~ 13.

Taichi Kato
