[vsnet-alert 484] Re: [vsnet 700] GSC 5585.556 existence?

Regarding the reality of GSC 5585.556.

I have checked both POSS I and POSS II images via DSS, and there
is a very faint variable located about 16 arcsec south of the
position of GCS 5585.556. However the exact location of the GSC
star is empty to about magnitude 19 or 20 on both images.

The faint variable is located at 15h 18m 53.54s -09d 30" 36.6" (J2000).
It is invisible on POSS I (March 1981) and presumably fainter than
about 19, but is readily visible on the POSS II image (March 1991)
at about magnitude 18. There is a close by star (end figures 52.49s
33.3") also about magnitude 18 that is easily visible on both
images.

It is quite probably that this faint variable has nothing at all
to do with GSC 5585.556.
