Nova Cas 1995 ------------- As you may be reading, IAUC No. 6213 (1995-08-26) has given a formal designation of Nova Cas 1995 for the probable nova M. Yamamoto discovered. Congratulations for M. Yamamoto on his discovery and quick notification of the nova! In the same IAUC, G. V. Williams reports the probably progenitor of the nova on the Palomar Digital Sky Survey red plate. The magnitude is given as 18-19. The observed outburst amplitude (9-10 mag) is relatively smaller than most of classical novae (except some peculiar or slow ones). So searches for pre-discovery plates would be important to define the true maximum and outburst amplitude. Another (very speculative) possibility is that this nova may be a dwarf nova. Spetroscopic observations, which I have not yet heard, would discriminate several possibilities concerning this nova. Regards, Taichi Kato
