Note: Mira (Omicron Ceti) is brightening rapidly, currently by
nearly 0.25 mag. per day.
Observers:
GRL = Bjorn H. Granslo (Blindern, Oslo, Norway). Instruments: 70-mm
refractor (L70), 10x50 binoculars (B10x50). Partly cloudy. AAVSO
sequences were used. Venus was observed for a few minutes before
it set. Green flashes were visible in the telescope and Venus
appeared red and dimmed by 6.5-8.0 mag. (slowly fluctuating) due
to the strong extinction. Its apparent brightness was compared
with stars near zenith. When Venus set at 16h56m UT its true
altitude was -0.6 deg., i.e. below the astronomical horizon.
