Sorry, I made an error in the comparsison magnitudes.  They should be:

In the V band image, using comparisons:
GSC 9025 1712    V=9.978
GSC 9025 60        V=9.375   Data from Guide, Tycho cat.
GSC 9025 915     V=9.872

I derive a magnitude for the nova of  V=8.98.

In the R band image, using comparisons
GSC 9025 60        R=9.24
GSC 9025 1712    R=9.82  Date from Guide, Rc calcs
GSC 9025 1809    R=10.24

I derive a magnitude of  R=8.89
