Observation of V838 Mon from Feb. 14.864 UT: G-7;J=V;K+4 (class 2).
Comparison stars (NAS.VSS sequence with V magnitudes derived from
UBV and Tycho-2 catalogues): G = 7.47, J = 8.17, K = 8.48.
Remarks concerning U Gem: The first observation was made immediately
after Mike Linnolt's notification of the outburst [vsnet-alert 7191],
but I was not able to secure a reliable positive observation due to
poor sky (although I may have glimpsed it at mag. ~11 1/2). Late at
night, however, the sky cleared and I was able to obtain a second
observation that showed that U Gem had brightened rapidly during
this night!
Yours sincerely,
Bjorn H. Granslo
