[vsnet-obs 34985] SS Cru At Maximum

Dear All,

SS Cru is amongst the stars listed in the GCVS as Not Studied. Several
stars of near magnitude 14 are seen near the plotted position and I have
been monitoring these several time per month since March 2000 through end
of June 2001. During this time none of these stars has shown any clear
variation.

On July 19, however, I noted a previously unseen faint star close SE of GSC
8640-2556 which is possibly the true SS Cru. Mati Morel has kindly checked
this star in the USNO-A2.0 catalogue as follows:

< I have checked the USNO-A2.0 catalogue. Your new star is in it, and
< quite bright. Data given is
< r = 10.3 b=15.3 V = 12.2 V is a calculated value.
< Position : (2000) 12h10m2.9s -56°39'36"

This SS Cru candidate appears to be a red variable and has since brightened
as shown by the following observations. Magnitudes are preliminary based
on GSC.

STAR YYMMDD(UT)	MAG	OBSERVER

CRUSS 20010623.4	<140	WPX
CRUSS 20010719.4	137	WPX
CRUSS 20010720.4	137	WPX
CRUSS 20010722.4	136	WPX
CRUSS 20010731.4	118	WPX
CRUSS 20010803.4	118	WPX

I plan to continue monitoring this star to better determine its character
and visual details. Can others add any further information on SS Cru?

Please post this message to other news groups as necessary.

Thanks and regards.
