The following visual estimates were made with a 17.5" (44.5 cm) f/4.1
dobsonian telescope. The limiting magnitude was 16.5 at 380x.
SN 1999cl in Messier 88
June 5 4:15 UT 14.3
June 7 4:15 UT 14.2
SN 1999cf in UGC 8539
June 7 5:20 UT 15.8
While I am confident of the estimates for SN 1999cl, I am not so for the
estimate for SN 1999cf. I am uncertain as to the reliability of the
magnitudes on the VSNET chart for visual sightings. The two stars to the
east-northeast of UGC 8539 were only slightly difficult with averted vision,
yet the chart lists their magnitudes as 16.66 and 17.34. I thought both
were brighter than a magnitude 16.3 star I recalled in the M88 field. The
supernova was definitely brighter than either star.
