Dear Taichi,
Regarding pre discovery observations of Nova Vel 1999 (V382 Vel), I can
report a similar result to Fraser Farrell's observation of May 20 :
STAR YYMMDD(UT) MAG OBSERVER
VELV382 990520.37 <4.5 WPX
This is based on my usual naked eye nova search before moving onto the
binocular stars. My limiting magnitude on May 20 was about 5.5 at that
time, based on HD92964 which has s reported V=5.36. Recent vsnet-chat
posting (vsnet-chat 1804, April 21, 1999) mentioned Eta Car near magnitude
V=5.25 so I have been paying closer attention to this immediate area. The
nova occured some 7 degrees north of Eta Car and my conservative limit of
4.5 above takes into account I was not concentrating directly at the nova
location.
Incidently, I do not make Eta Car as bright as has been reported. On most
nights I have been able to hold HD92964 comfortably with the naked eye from
Heathcote but require a little too much imagination to see Eta. My current
estimates with 10x50mm binoculars place Eta Car at 5.6. Perhaps this
merely represents different results for the visual observer?
Regards
Peter Williams
