[vsnet-obs 11958] SN 1998bu

Hello Observers'

Well, the stars' were twinkiling but I decided to try for the supernova
in M96. Living in the city of Halifax and in an apartment on the top floor
is a challenge, my view being only to the SW to NE! Because of an overhang
the zenith is unobservable.
Anyways, I set my C8 up and looked at the M96 region at 63x with my 32mm
Plossl, I find the 40mm Plossl makes the objects a bit fainter. Boom, there
was M96, I looked and there was the supernova - my first one ever observed
in a galaxy! I used the starchart from the AAVSO of the region and had to
put the SN at 12.0 magnitude at 0155 UT. Below is a crude ascii of the area;

                       *
    N
    ^ 114 *
 E _| . SN
                                  () M96
                                .
                                 126

I left out the decimal points, thus 126 =12.6 magnitude. So I had to use
the 2 stars as guides to estimate the magnitude.

After this observation, I looked at a few more objects, saw M97, M108,
M65, and M66. The last 2 galaxies poped right out and M97 was faint patch
of light. I could not see M109 which was funny.

In any event it was an ok evening, but COOL !! with a slight gutsy wind.

Clear skies...
