Dear Variable Star Enthusiasts,
We are proud to announce the availability on Internet (WWW) of a
database with outburst activity data of 269 selected cataclysmic
variables. The database includes nearly 1000 outburst measurements
discovered through 1995 June, and is presented with the objects
listed in order of increasing right ascension. For each outburst,
the calendar date and HJD of outburst detection, the maximum
brightness attained during the outburst, the discoverer and a
reference to literature with additional information is given.
An accompanying paper (also available on Internet) discusses the
creation process of the database, the sources of information that
were consulted, and the overall structure of the database. It is
concluded with a practical application of the database, by reviewing
the Cataclysmic Variables Alert Programme.
Both paper and database are currently presented at the CV Meeting in
Keele (UK) by Steve Howell.
The Outburst Activity Database and paper are available on line at the
WWW site of Steve Howell (homepage http://vsnet.psi.edu/sbhgen.html),
as PostScript files. You'll need a PostScript previewer to display
the files on your computer. Otherwise, retrieve both files, store
them on disk and subsequently print them on a PostScript printer.
If you have no access to PostScript devices, contact me for an RTF-
version of the paper and database.
We intend to keep the database up-to-date and to make new releases
available over Internet on a regular basis. Your comments, input (and
corrections) are most welcome !
Kind regards,
Tonny Vanmunster Steve B. Howell
