Dear Variable Star Enthusiasts,
CATACLYSMIC VARIABLE STARS: How and why they vary
I'd like to announce the publication of a new book, by myself,
titled ``Cataclysmic Variable Stars: How and why they vary''.
This is an introductory book to the topic of cataclysmic variable
stars, aimed at serious amateur astronomers, undergraduates,
new research students, and researchers in adjacent fields.
It is thus at a lower level than Warner's `Cataclysmic Variable
Stars', shorter and cheaper and without the comprehensive
compilations of data and detail. Instead, it presents an overview of
the behaviour of CVs, emphasising the reasons for the variability.
The main text is non-mathematical, but supplementary `boxes' contain
mathematics at about undergraduate level.
The 13 chapters are: 1. Observing cataclysmic variables;
2. The orbital cycle; 3. Spectral characteristics;
4. The evolution of cataclysmic variables; 5. Discs and outbursts;
6. Elliptical discs and superoutbursts; 7. Siphons, winds and
streams; 8. Magnetic cataclysmic variables I: AM Her stars;
9. Magnetic cataclysmic variables II: intermediate polars;
10. Flickering and oscillations; 11. The nova eruption; 12.
Secondary star variations; 13. Variations on the theme.
The 210-page paperback contains 154 illustrations and is published
by Springer-Verlag UK, with an ISBN of 1-85233-211-5. It can be
ordered from the usual internet bookshops such as www.amazon.com or
www.amazon.co.uk. However, the UK office of Springer-Verlag are
offering a 15% discount for orders sent to them using the order
form at http://vsnet.springer.co.uk/or_form.htm (or contact
orders@svl.co.uk). The prices (with discount) are 20 pounds,
34 dollars or 68 deutchsmarks, depending on geographical location,
plus 2 pounds postage (make sure to claim the discount on the form).
