NSV 14652

Subject: [vsnet-alert 5202] Rare outburst of NSV 14652
Dear colleagues,
I have just detected a (faint) outburst of NSV 14652, a suspected CV =
(UG?) on which very few information seems to be available, using the =
0.35-m f/6.3 telescope and ST-7 CCD (unfiltered) of CBA Belgium =
Observatory. The object is located at R.A. =3D 23h38m49.2s, Decl =3D =
+28d19'55" (J2000.0). The NSV lists a magnitude range of 13.8 - 16.0 =
(photographic).
I know that Timo Kinnunen once mentioned the object in a VSNET email, =
indicating that it was bright on 3 out of 11 POSS scans, with a maximum =
brightness around mag 12.
More details on my observations :
200008XX.XXX UT, <17.0 C
20000822.882 UT, 15.8 C
We have initiated a time-series photometry session on NSV 14652, upon =
its outburst detection. A quick inspection of the current stage of the =
light curve isn't yielding large amplitude modulations (yet).
Please continue monitoring this variable, as so little seems to be known =
about its nature.
Best regards,
Tonny Vanmunster

NSV 14652: new campaign target
As reported by Tonny Vaunmunster, the suspected UG star NSV 14652
is in outburst. The object has been selected as a possible noteworthy
object (possible CV candidate) since the possible identification
with a ROSAT source.

Another possible ROSAT identification.
NSV14652:
233849.1 +281955 (2000.0) NSV14652 ? 13.8 16.0 P -
ROSAT:
233847.7 +282010 (2000.0) 1RXS-F_J233847.8+282011 0.025 0.90 0.93
The ROSAT hardness ratio seems to be a little hard for a dwarf nova,
but the low count rate has made discrimation difficult.
Timo Kinnunen surveyed past photographic plates and indeed found
brightening which can be regarded as outbursts!
Follow-up observations, including astrometry, multicolor photometry
and spectroscopy, of the present outburst are strongly encouraged.
The object is selected as a target-of-opportunity program of the VSNET
campaign.

Taichi Kato

My inspection of the same scans revealed a brightening for a few days in 1993
June, when NSV 14652 had become almost as bright as the nearby mag 13.1 GSC
star. Unfortunately neither the rise nor the fading is covered by the POSS
scans, so it cannot be stated for sure whether that brightening was actually
an outburst.

A rise by (at least) 1.2 magnitudes in 14 days does not necessarily imply an
outburst. During the 14-day interval NSV 14652 was checked by (at least) two
visual observers, but at mag 16 the variable would have been probably too
faint for Timo and certainly too faint for myself.
