In vsnet-id 839 Brian referred to the McCuskey and Mehlhorn (1963) charts for a field near the galactic centre. I used these charts years ago, but it is not easy to determine the boundaries of each area, in terms of RA and Dec. The areas are aligned with the galactic equator, so the entire field is rotated about 30 degrees anticlockwise WRT the centre (2000) 18:30:45 -29:54.9. Some time ago, I worked out the corners of the whole field, as follows. (1950) (2000) ------------------------------------------------- SW 18:18:18 -30:36:00 18:21:31 -30:34:30 SE 18:30:36 -31:58:00 18:33:51 -31:55:42 NE 18:36:42 -29:16:30 18:39:53 -29:13:42 NW 18:24:33 -27:56:00 18:27:42 -27:54:06 If you plot these points on your star atlas of choice it will assist in determining whether a new variable etc falls within the limits of the field. I provide a schematic diagram below, showing the relative location of each area 1-9. Each area covers an area of 1 square degree. Schematic arrangement of McCuskey & Mehlhorn areas. nos 1-9 (Astron. J. 1963, 65,319). "Late M-type Stars near the Galactic Centre".
