The 50mm lens looks just fine---I wouldn't take Kato-san's 10-deg
criterion too strictly. Use a filter if you can and definitely stop the
lens down to f/4 or so to minimize aberrations (mostly sphero-chromatism).
With the ~40 square degrees the 50mm lens gives with the KAF400 chip,
there will always be stars on every image to do fairly good zero-point
calibration in standard V (via Tycho-2 and other sources). You'll have to
be careful with flat-fielding however.
There are a few folks doing surveying in this mode, yes? I recall
there being some folks in Japan especially. They could certainly offer
some tips for getting 'best' results.
