If you don't need to get the full capability of CCDs or don't need to get higher precision, you can simply estimate CCD magnitudes simply by displaying the image and make visual comparison just as in visual observation. I know that some people are actually doing this process, and don't rely on photometry software. With this method, one can get 0.1 mag accuracy (one can even discern superhumps), and can simply use CCDs as a tool for recording fainter objects. Regards, Taichi Kato
